Rangers Become First NHL Team to Secure Postseason Spot

NEW YORK (AP) — Adam Fox scored 36 seconds into overtime, and the New York Rangers became the first NHL team to clinch a playoff berth Saturday night with a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

The Rangers, who have been one of the league's top teams this season, improved to 45-31-5 with the win. They are now guaranteed to finish in the top three in the Metropolitan Division.

Fox's game-winner came on a slap shot from the right circle that beat Canadiens goaltender Jake Allen. It was Fox's 11th goal of the season and his first career overtime goal.

The Rangers also got goals from Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves to earn the win in net.

The Canadiens, who are now 33-39-9, got goals from Christian Dvorak and Nick Suzuki. Jake Allen made 33 saves in the loss.

The Rangers will be back in action on Monday night when they host the New York Islanders. The Canadiens will be back in action on Tuesday night when they visit the Ottawa Senators.
